    Hi Tim I like Coal Tits, took a couple of photo's of them myself at the weekend.

    I note your camera aperture was set at F8, i may have gone to 7.1 or 6.3 just for a faster shutter speed, and put the ISO up to 800. Mind you I dont know what the light was like there do I :-)

    Hi Warren. Thanks for your comment. With an image stabilized lens I felt confident in being able to sacrifice shutter speed for an increased depth of field. At 400mm through a non-prime lens an aperture setting of even f/6.3 can lead to a very, very narrow focal plane. Instead the IS worked well and much more of the image is sharp. The other factor is that of noise – on my older 1Ds, the extent of noise at 800 is considerably greater than at 500 and I didn't want to spoil that beautifully clean background.

    I use a stabilized 120 - 400mm zoom lens Tim, it's always difficult to asses just how much depth of field you're gonna get, I always try for the maximum depth of field, but at the same time trying to keep above a 160 shutter speed, not at all easy is it, I dont usually go above 800 iso.
